Workshop Description

Close To The Edge: Storytelling for Prevention and Intervention of Substance Abuse - Story's power allows listeners to make meaning, test risky choices and safely explore sensitive issues. Discover stories relevant to all levels of tellers that need to be told. Learn how to create a safe environment for telling. Collaborate in designing prevention & intervention story programs and exercises for all ages. Therapist and health educator Allison Cox illustrates the therapeutic groundwork and process that storytelling and story listening offers as a prevention/intervention tool for drug and alcohol issues. She will move the participants through a combination of story, interactive discussion and processing exercises that have proven useful in her 24 years of experience in the prevention and intervention field. Stories will be shared that address a number of issues salient to this focus and that can be told to varying ages of audiences. Important trends in successful prevention and intervention methods will be shared, along with their relevance to storytelling.

Who should attend:

This workshop is relevant to storytellers (beginning and advanced), educators, health professionals, clergy, youth advocates - anyone who works with adults or youth who are at risk for these issues or want to incorporate story as a method of intervention for recovery.
